Euro 4 vs Euro 5 Himalayan
Mid way through 2021, we saw the introduction of what we call “Euro 5” emission standards for Royal Enfield motorcycles in the UK. Whilst these standards are not used worldwide, this was introduced into Europe at the same time and is likely to be phased into other demographic areas over time.
The higher the emission standard, the more stringent the requirements are for the bike. To achieve this, manufacturers often have to run the bikes in a lean condition with additional emissions equipment.
Which Royal Enfields are affected by this change?
- From the existing model line up, the Himalayan and 650 Twins (Interceptor + Continental GT) are affected. These were both previously Euro 4 machines and have been revised to meet the Euro 5 standards.
- A new bike to the range is the 350 Meteor, this begins its life cycle as a Euro 5 compliant machine.
- Finally, the 500 UCE (EFI) finishes production on the Euro 4 standards, and will not be produced as a Euro 5 compliant machine.
Some of the changes introduced for the Himalayan?
- Completely new fuel injection setup, with the ECU now incorporated onto the side of the throttle body. Previously, this was mounted further back under the seat as a separate unit.
- Secondary air injection system is now removed.
- Introduction of the tripper navigation, and redesigned windshield to incorporate this.
- Redesigned side frame work around the petrol tank.
- Redesigned rear rack with increased strength.
- Current colour range for the 2021 Euro 5 bikes.
What effects does this have on the fitment of accessories to the Euro 5 Himalayan?
- Overall, a lot of accessories and upgrades are compatible for the Euro 5 model, and items such as free flow silencers, air filters, etc will continue to work within the parameters of the fuel injection system.
Some of the main parts which are not compatible between the old and new models are listed below:
- The Euro 4 fuel controllers (Power Commander + PowerTronic) will not be compatible, and these will need dedicated units which are under development.
- Air injection system is no longer present, so the delete kits are not applicable.
- Framework has changed on the side of the fuel tank, so accessories such as the side containers and spotlights have their own dedicated part number.
- The short or extended screens used on the Euro 4 models are no longer compatible due to the Tripper utilising more space. We are manufacturing new screens for the Euro 5 model, and have invested in dedicated tooling to produce these in a high pressure moulding to give an excellent quality product.
- Change of clutch lever, so fitment of our adjustable levers differs and an alternative part number is listed.
- BoosterPlug does not support Euro 5 bikes.
Finally, all of our Himalayan accessories listed online include information in the description if the fitment differs.
