From Nordcapp to Cape Town on a 1952 Royal Enfield 500 Twin
If ever a motorcyclist has proved to be daring and determined it must be Gordon May! After riding a Royal Enfield Bullet to India, a BSA Bantam to Egypt, a Matchless to Vietnam, Gordon has now ridden from the most northerly accessible point by road in Europe, Nordkapp in Norway, to Cape Town at the southern tip of Africa.
The 15,000 miles involved in this project is itself staggering. His journey took in the extreme temperatures north of the Arctic Circle to the tropical heat of 50c degrees in the vast Nubian Desert of Sudan. The journey involved Gordon travelling through no fewer than thirty-four separate countries!
This astonishing ride was completed on a 1952 Royal Enfield 500 Twin, albeit heavily modified. No less amazing was the amount of equipment to be carried on the bike for this ‘solo’ journey. Fitting rider-equipment, bike-equipment, camping-equipment and ‘essentials’ on to the 500 Twin looks like a work of art in itself. ‘Congratulations Gordon!’ somehow doesn’t seem nearly enough!
